The Steel Potato Award.
The potato in a pot competition has been kicked off! The idea came about when we delved into the history of allotment holders to discover the story of Mr Sydney Steel and his bumper crop of potatoes!
One of our first plot holders from back in 1917, Mr Steel, grew an astonishing 40 stones (250kg) of potatoes in his first year! To celebrate this remarkable achievement we’ve put together a centenary competition- who can grow the most potatoes in a single pot?
The great ‘grow-off’ has begun with Calverley Nursery having 6 pots, Parkside School with 4 pots, Calverley CE with 4 pots and Sarah Keech with 2 pots.
Whos pots will grow best in the pots??
The big weigh in will be held on August 11th where the winners will receive a mystery prize. A prize giving ceremony will be held on Sunday August 13th– the allotment open day. We look forward to seeing you there!
